The Horizon Europe Health Cluster supports research and innovation in six health-related challenges. As well as advancing knowledge, it will build health research capacity, develop and demonstrate innovative solutions that will improve the health and well-being of people, and support the transformation of the health care system.
Irish health researchers consistently perform above the EU average. In 2021 Irish researchers secured €29.2 million in funding from the Health Cluster, spread across 23 projects and involving 36 individual researchers, with Irish researchers leading on three of these projects. There was notable success in ‘new’ areas such as in green pharmaceuticals (4 successful projects achieving €2.9m) and in the environment health calls (€3.4 million across 5 successful projects). The 2022 results are now being finalised and look promising.
2023 provides new opportunities. The Health work programme 2023-2024 includes 44 call topics and a budget of over €1bn, and is expected to fund approximately 165 new EU health projects. The Cancer Mission work programme 2023 includes 4 new call topics. There will also be additional opportunities in the EU Partnerships in Health, such as the Innovative Heath Initiative (IHI), and the Global Health EDCTP3, and in other areas of Horizon Europe such as the European Innovation Council and the Digital Europe Programme.
January 2023 will be busy. On 19 January 2023 the European Commission will hold an information Day about the Horizon Europe Health Cluster. This follows the Info Day on the Cancer Mission 2023 call topics on 17 January 2023. On 20 Jan there will be an online brokerage event held for both the Horizon Europe Health and the Cancer Mission 2023 calls, with the chance to present a short pitch, and also to arrange 1:1 meetings with other online participants. Registration for all events is now open. The 2023 Health calls and Cancer Mission calls will both open for applications on 12 January 2023.
