Marine project results across Horizon Europe

We are now midway through the Horizon Europe Framework Programme and in 2023 Irish research groups and companies excelled in marine-related projects, with funding awards totalling €47.2m, up from a figure of €27.8m in 2022.

2023 results

Projects come from all Pillars and Clusters within the Framework Programme and over a wide range of themes.

Some examples of results in 2023 are:

BLUE4ALL - Blueprint demonstration for co-created effective, efficient and resilient networks of MPAs, an Innovation Action in which UCD are partners.

TCD are coordinating a Mission Ocean CSA project entitled C-FAARER - Community-driven Farming for the Atlantic and Arctic sea basins through REgeneRative aquaculture – Redrose Developments and Horizon Nua also participate.

The UoG are partners in the Innovation Action called CLIMAREST - Coastal Climate Resilience and Marine Restoration Tools for the Arctic Atlantic basin

An interesting MSCA action looks at MicroAqua - The role of Microbes in Aquaculture: understanding the functional role of oyster microbiomes in response to changing climates and diseases in which UCC participate whilst Bantry Marine Research Station and Teagasc are involved in VALIAS - Valorization of Marine Invasive Alien Species a Pathway Towards the Protection of European Marine Biodiversity: From Destructive Invaders to a Source of Wealth.

UCC, The University of Galway and Bird & Bird will lead involvement in a Preparatory Phase project called MARINERG-i_PP - Marine Renewable Energy Distributed Research Infrastructure

UCD were successful in an ERC Advanced Grant for a project entitled REALTIMESEA - Real-time measurements of oceanic waves using connected buoys and mobile stations.

Mission to Restore Our Ocean and Waters

I want to bring attention to the opportunities available through the upcoming Mission to Restore Our Ocean and Waters by 2030 calls – a series of 2024 topics will be published imminently.

This Mission is an area where we have seen strong results and national engagement from a wide range of actors and stakeholders. The EU Mission Ocean and Waters’ online Portal is a one-stop-shop for stakeholders involved and interested in implementing the Mission Ocean and Waters.

Ø  Keep track of the Mission's progress toward its objectives.

Ø  Follow the actions and activities across Mission Lighthouses.

Ø  Find financial and investment opportunities related to the Mission.

Ø  Access the Mission library to learn about and share innovative solutions for ocean and water restoration.

Ø  Engage with citizens and stakeholders through outreach, dissemination and Mission events.

Save the Date for the Mission information days which are provisionally scheduled for April 25th and 26th in person in Brussels – further details to follow.
